Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is the practice of creating tiny pinpricks in the skin using a group of very short sterilized needles. The needles reach the layer of the skin where you produce collagen, the protein that works like a support structure for your skin.

As you age, you produce less collagen, so that’s one reason why skin starts to sag and fine lines set in. Microneedling can stimulate your body to make new collagen, and it also encourages faster cellular turnover so new skin can rise to replace old skin.

What conditions does microneedling treat?

Microneedling can help with many skin concerns on the face, including:

  • Fine lines
  • Acne scars
  • Skin texture irregularities
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dark spots
  • Slight skin sagging

Although mainly used on the face, microneedling can have beneficial effects in other parts of your body. For example, some people use microneedling to eliminate stretch marks on their abdomen, hips, or thighs. Microneedling can also help with hair loss.

How does microneedling work?

Before a microneedling treatment, The Dermatology Center of Worcester team applies a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. You’ll wait for 30-60 minutes as the anesthetic sets in, and once your face is numb, your treatment starts.

During the microneedling treatment, the team uses a specialized tool (usually either a roller or pen-like stamping device) to prick the skin in the treatment area. The process covers your whole treatment area evenly, which usually takes 45-60 minutes.

You might have some minor bleeding, which the team gently cleans following the treatment. The newly-created channels in your skin (the tiny pinpricks) provide an excellent direct-delivery method for skin care products such as serums, so the team may apply a product at the end of your treatment.

How many microneedling sessions will I need?

Every person’s dermatology needs are different, so no two treatment plans are alike. The team discusses your microneedling goals with you and gives you an idea of what to expect with each treatment so you can best plan your treatment course.

Many people have four to six sessions to get optimal results, but you might notice skin improvements after only one or two sessions.  Results improve steadily over time after each treatment, as microneedling triggers collagen production for three to six months.
